Here’s an intriguing first-of-its-kind Hollywood partnership for Meta: The Mark Zuckerberg led tech corp is teaming with Lionsgate to covert their highly anticipated Thanksgiving blockbuster The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping in 3D for its theatrical release. But there’s more: the Francis Lawrence directed prequel will play on Meta VR glasses in 3D following the pic’s play in cinemas.

Additional Lionsgate feature titles in Meta VR Glasses and their availability will be announced at a later date.

It’s the first time that Meta has teamed with a Hollywood studio to convert a movie into 3D.

The 3D conversion was completed in collaboration with DNEG, the Oscar-winning visual effects and animation studio.

The movie, which is expected to mint $60M-$70M in its North American opening, hits theaters on Nov. 20.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will play on Meta VR Glasses debuting in spring 2027. The glasses were unveiled at Meta Connect 2026 and feature a 5K Infinite Display, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos spatial audio and Imax enhanced. A pair of Meta VR Glasses weigh about 100 grams.

Though there’s nothing AI related about Lionsgate and Meta’s Hunger Games collaboration, it puts the AI-forward thinking motion picture studio in business with a tech company which is blazing a path in the space, specifically its personal AI agent Meta Muse which launched in September. Over the summer, Meta faced backlash from Hollywood studios, specifically CAA, after rolling out the Meta Image AI feature on social media. Meta Image AI provided users the ability to create an AI photo of a person simply by plugging in their public Instagram handle.

While other Hollywood studios have been discerning about their embrace of AI, Lionsgate has been unabashed. Two years ago, Lionsgate partnered with AI research company Runway to generate video from its IP. Runway’s creation and training of a new AI model was designed to help Lionsgate Studios, its filmmakers and other creative talent augment their work. Back in June, Lionsgate took an equity stake in Runway with plans to pull from its IP library for an AI-generated short-form series.

The Hunger Games movies through five features have grossed over $3.3 billion at the global box office. Lionsgate has built out the franchise with a stage production in London and a theme park attraction in Dubai.
