Four people have been injured after a drive-by shooting outside a venue hosting a boxing event, including a 19-year-old woman who was shot in the head.
Queensland police Detective Inspector Ian Galpin said a group of people were gathered at the passenger drop off zone outside a hotel at Loganholme, south of Brisbane, about 8.18pm on Saturday when a Mitsubishi pulled up.
Galpin said police would allege a “number of shots” were fired from the front window where two males wearing balaclavas and gloves were sitting, striking four people.
A Jimboomba woman, 19, was shot in the neck and head. She was undergone surgery and remains in a critical condition.
Speaking on Sunday, Galpin described her as an “innocent bystander”.
“It’s horrific. It’s something that her family should never have to go through.”
Three others were injured and remain in serious but stable conditions: a Browns Plains man, 38, shot in the abdomen and arm, a Salisbury man, 37, shot in the abdomen, and a Cornubia man, 27, shot in the abdomen.
Galpin alleged the Mitsubishi was set alight on Maloney Road at Waterford West, which was declared a crime scene, while a second car collected the occupants of the Mitsubishi and departed.
“It is possible one of these persons from the Mitsubishi was injured or burnt during this process,” Galpin said.
Galpin said it was too soon to say whether it was related to organised crime.
“This is a horrific event in a public space where adults and children were simply trying to enjoy a sporting event and this incident, it’s clearly not acceptable. We will not tolerate it.”
Speaking on Sunday morning, Logan’s mayor, Jon Raven, described residents in the area as frightened.
“This has sent a shockwave through Logan. We’ve never seen something like this in Logan before,” Raven told the Today show.
“Our hearts go out obviously to the victims and the staff and the people at this boxing event.
“I’ve been to one of these events before, they’re [a] really family-friendly environment, and I know there’s lots of children who were there, and this will impact them for the rest of their lives.”
The deputy commander of Queensland police, Chris Stream, described the scene as “confronting”.
“A number of people had suffered gunshot wounds,” he told Today.
Raven said the event had been organised to help children steer clear of violence.
“[The organiser] will be devastated this has happened because he loves boxing and uses it as a tool to empower and reconnect young people who might be going off the rails, and this is the opposite of what he’ll want to see,” Raven said.
Logan City Titles shared a statement on social media on Sunday morning.
“We are heartbroken about the incident that occurred at the fight night,” it read.
“Logan City Titles was a family event, an event for our community, showcasing local talent, hard work and everyone’s skills inside the ring.
“These types of incidents have no place in the boxing community or any part of the broader community.”
The offenders are still at large but police said they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the public.
Police were urging anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
